Can you put mini splits in my mobile or manufactured home?

Yes, and it's usually the better option. Retrofitting ducts into a manufactured home means working the shallow belly cavity under the floor, and most homes don't have the room or the return air path for it. A mini split skips all of that. We mount a head in the living room and one in each bedroom, then run the line sets back to a single outdoor unit. Your existing wall furnace can stay for heat if you want to keep it. We check the panel first, because older mobile homes often run 100 amp service and the outdoor unit needs its own circuit.

Question 2

My HOA has requirements. Can you handle the approval and the permit?

That's a normal job for us. Most condo and townhome associations in Carlsbad and Encinitas want architectural review before anything gets mounted on an exterior wall. Send us the requirements you already have. We'll work inside them, tell you what the association will actually see, and put the install together so it passes review the first time. We pull the city permit ourselves, so that's off your plate. We're licensed in California, HVAC license #1149074, and we register the equipment warranty in your name once the system is running.

Where is the outdoor unit allowed to sit, and how loud is it?

The outdoor unit is small compared to a central AC condenser, though it is not tiny. A single head condenser is usually around three feet wide and two feet tall and well over a hundred pounds. It goes on a patio pad, a side yard slab, or a wall bracket where the association allows one. Associations tend to care about three things. Whether it's visible from the street, whether it's on a shared wall, and how loud it reads at the property line. Inverter condensers run quiet, and we'll give you the decibel rating for the exact unit we're quoting so you can put a real number on your application. The line set runs in a paintable cover along the exterior wall, and we agree that route with you before install day.

What is a cassette, and what does 6, 9, or 12 mbh mean?

Cassette properly means the ceiling recessed type of indoor unit, the square one that sits flush in the ceiling and blows out of four sides. The far more common indoor unit is the wall head, a slim rectangle mounted high on a wall. People use cassette loosely for both, so when you tell us cassette we will confirm which one you mean. Mbh means thousand BTU per hour. A 9 mbh head is a 9,000 BTU head. It's how much cooling or heating that one head can move, so a bigger room gets a bigger number. On a multi head system the heads often add up to more than the outdoor unit's rating, because they rarely all run at full output at the same time.

I'm building a 398 square foot ADU. What size do I need and where does the head go?

A one bedroom that size usually lands on a single head, often in the 9 to 12 mbh range, though we confirm it against your actual plans. Insulation, window area, and which direction the glass faces all move that number. Bigger is not better here. An oversized head cools the air fast, shuts off before it pulls any humidity out, and leaves the room feeling clammy. We put the head in the main living space on a wall that can throw air toward the bedroom door. Loop us in during framing. Running the line set and the condensate drain before drywall is far cleaner than cutting it in afterward.

Three bedrooms over two floors. How many heads does a townhome need?

Accepted Answer

A head per floor is the starting point, and a three bedroom over two floors often lands at three or four. Heat rises, so an upstairs sharing one thermostat with a downstairs is always the floor that complains. Separate heads mean separate control. You cool the bedrooms at night and leave the main floor alone. One outdoor unit can run all of them. The thing we look at hardest in a townhome is which exterior wall each head backs onto, because every head needs a line set path down to that single outdoor unit.

Do you install Daikin or Mitsubishi?

Daikin and Mitsubishi are the two names most people bring up, and for good reason. Both make ductless equipment we see regularly in this area. We're brand agnostic. We'll quote what fits your space, your electrical, and your budget, and we service what's already on the wall no matter who installed it. We don't run commission salespeople, so nobody here gets paid more for steering you toward one label. If a brand is already specified in your HOA packet or your ADU plans, tell us and we'll price that.

Question 8

Can one outdoor unit really run several rooms?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A single outdoor unit can drive several indoor heads, commonly two to five depending on the model. Each head gets its own remote and its own setpoint, so the guest room isn't cooling while nobody's in it. The tradeoff is routing. Every head needs a refrigerant path back to that one outdoor unit, so we plan the runs before we quote rather than discovering a problem on install day. If you only need one room handled, a single head system is simpler. We'll tell you straight which way makes sense once we see the space.
